Should you change your relationship status on Facebook?

Let’s face it, nowadays a lot of your communication with friends takes place through facebook. In previous (pre-digital) times, you might have confided in a handful of good friends when you met someone new, then kept them updated as things progressed and announced it to them when the relationship became official. Today, with a couple of clicks you can change your relationship status on Facebook and announce to all of your Facebook friends that you are in a relationship.

Should you change your relationship status on Facebook at all?

In many ways, updating your relationship status on Facebook is great, because it allows you to do what you want to do when you are in love: shout it from the rooftops and tell everyone that you have found a special someone. However, there are also some obvious risks involved in changing your relationship status on Facebook. First of all, a change in relationship status on Facebook will let all of your friends know about a new relationship status – even those that aren’t very close friends at all, like work colleagues and casual acquaintances. Do they really need to know that you are in a new relationship? If you don’t want every person you are connected with on Facebook to see your relationship status, you can adjust the privacy settings accordingly.

However, even if your privacy settings only show your close friends your new relationship status, you need to consider that the update will also be shown on your new partner’s Facebook timeline. If you really want to keep the news to a limited circle of friends, you need to make sure he/she does the same.

Finally, one good reason why many people choose not to share their relationship status on Facebook at all is the fact that it will have to changed if the relationship ends. While the positive feedback, likes, congrats and happy comments on a status update announcing you are in a relationship are great, you probably won’t want the commiserations, „dislike“ comments and expressions of pity when the relationship ends and you change your relationship status on Facebook back to „single“.
